Biathlete Casey Smith Vies to Make European Cup Biathlon Team

December 08, 2011 (Winthrop, WA) – Casey Smith, a Winthrop native and member of the Methow Valley Biathlon Team, has been named as the Junior Biathlete of the Year for the 2011 US Junior National Biathlon Team. Casey led the US Men’s team at the Junior World Championships, which were held in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic, and was the top ranked Youth after the US Jr./Youth Trials in Jericho, Vermont.

Casey spent most of January and February on the road in Central Europe, racing and gaining experience in multiple events in Germany, Italy, and Czech Republic. He finished up his season with three National Championship titles at the US Biathlon Championships in Mt. Itasca, Minnesota.

A sophomore at Montana State University at Bozeman, in the Department of Earth Sciences, Casey is learning to apply scientific method to the study of snow and ice. He joined the US Junior National Team for summer and fall training camps in Colorado and Utah.

He will be looking to top his previous year’s performance as he moves into the Junior age category (age 19-20) at the Junior Worlds in Kontiolahti, Finland, in late February, 2012.

He enjoys coaching the younger members of his home-team, Methow Valley Biathlon, whenever possible.
