March 22, 2009 (Trondheim, Norway) – In the Biathlon World Cup race on Sunday in Trondheim, Norway Canada’s Jean Philippe Leguellec finished a strong 17th in the 15km mass start. Leguellec crossed the line 2:31.6 behind race winner Ole Einar Bjoerndalen of Norway. Bjoerndalen won his 89th World Cup with solid skiing and perfect shooting. Simon Eder of Austria took second place 39.1 seconds back. Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway was third 53.4 back from Bjoerndalen’s winning time of 41:12.9. The USA’s Tim Burke was 24th in the 30-person field. Only the top 30 men were eligible to start today’s mass start. For more on today’s men’s race click here
Norway’s Tora Berger matched her countryman winning the women’s 12.5km mass start race thrilling the Norwegian fans by out-sprinting Germany’s Hauswald (2nd), and France’s Sandrine Bailly in the final 800m. Sweden’s Helena Jonsson 12th today remains the overall World Cup leader heading into the final race series in Russia. No North American are ranked in the top 30 in the overall and were not eligible to start today’s race. For more on today’s race click here
The 2009 IBU Biathlon World Cup season will wrap up next week in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, however full fields are not expected due to the isolated location.
