Calling on the CDN Government to Increase Budget of Athlete Assistance Program

release by AthletesCAN

December 24, 2010 – The Athlete Assistance Program (AAP), or carding, is currently being reviewed by Sport Canada. While there has been a considerable increase in funding commitments for sport by the federal government leading up to and following the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, there has not been an increase in direct funding to athletes.

AthletesCAN, the Canadian Olympic Committee Athlete Commission, and the Canadian Paralympic Committee Athlete Council are calling on the Government to increase the AAP budget by 20%.

In order for Canadian athletes to continue to succeed on the international stage, we are requesting that the Government increase funding for the Athlete Assistance Program to account for cost of living increases over the past 6 years. This will achieve parity with athlete funding in 2004.

We need your help to push this ask forward.
