Canada’s Alex Harvey wins Gold at European Cup

by John Symon
February 2, 2007 – Canada’s Alex Harvey came in first in the junior
15-km classic x-c European Cup event held in Hochfilzen, Austria on
January 21, and his time of 44:13.9 seconds was good enough for
fourth place overall in a field of 21 senior skiers and 29 juniors.

Snow conditions in Europe are far from ideal this year and according
to a report in Quebec Hebdo Harvey commented as he described the
race, “We skied in the rain on a 3km loop with grass on the sides.
The (overall) winner was a German who is sometimes among the top 20
in the World Cup and he only beat me by 57 seconds.”

Calgary’s Brent McMurtry was leading Harvey through most of the race,
but on the last lap, Harvey “opened up the machine” to overtake his
fellow Canadian by four seconds.

We were in touch with Harvey, who turns 19 this September, and he
describes himself, “as better at skate skiing than at classic
skiing.” Harvey also pointed out that he started skiing at a younger
age than his famous father, Pierre, a long time member of the
Canadian national x-c ski team.

The younger Harvey added that he is setting his sights on the 2010
Vancouver (winter) Olympics. Harvey is also an accomplished mountain
biker.
