Canada’s Para-Nordic Athletes Continue Domination with Gold and Silver at IPC World Cup in Wisconsin

release by Cross Country Canada

January 15, 2013 (Cable, Wisconsin) – Canada’s Para-Nordic squad continued its domination at the IPC World Cup in Cable Wisconsin, adding a gold and silver to its bag of medals this week on Tuesday.

Brian McKeever, of Canmore, Alta., completed their golden hat trick in the men’s visually impaired skate-ski sprint races. Led by his guide and childhood friend, Erik Carleton, the 10-time Paralympic medallist McKeever was solid to win his third-straight gold over Paralympic bronze medallist, Zebastian Modin of Sweden.

Mark Arendz, of Springton, P.E.I., skied his way back onto the podium in the men’s standing sprint race, winning the silver medal for the second time this week. The 22-year-old, of Springton, P.E.I., was hunting down his first-ever IPC World Cup victory in cross-country skiing, but stumbled in the last 50-metres which forced him into second spot.

Norway’s Nils-Erik Ulset held off the hard-charging Canuck to win the gold.

It was the third IPC World Cup cross-country ski medal for Arendz, who made his Paralympic debut in 2010. He also has 15 medals in the biathlon disciplines.

“Mark’s race was very smart tactically, and he put in a great effort,” said Robin McKeever, head coach, Canadian Paralympic Team. “He closed down Ulset, but just came up an inch short so we are happy with his result. It has been a good week for him in cross-country skiing and he will look to build on this for the biathlon races.”

Battling the flu bug, Saskatoon’s Colette Bourgonje fought hard to finish just off the podium in fourth in the women’s sit-ski sprint race. Norway’s Mariann Marthinsen won the women’s sit-ski category.

Robbi Weldon, of Thunder Bay, Ont., was the lone woman to race in the women’s visually impaired sprint.
