Career-bests for USA’s Nordgren 16th and Doherty 17th in Men’s 20km at IBU Biathlon World Championship

March 13, 2019 (Ostersund, SWE) – Americans Leif Nordgren and Sean Doherty both posted career-best results at an IBU Biathlon Championship finishing 16th and 17th respectively in the Men’s 20km on Wednesday in Ostersund, Sweden.

Leif Nordgren [P] Nordic Focus
Taking the gold was Germany’s Arnd Peiffer who was one of only two competitors to shoot clean. Vladimir Iliev of Bulgaria won the silver with one penalty at 1:08.7 back, while Tarjei Boe of Norway, also with one penalty settle for the bronze a mere 0.4 seconds behind Iliev.

“It definitely hasn’t been the best championships for me before today,” said Nordgren who had only one missed target. “I had a disaster in the mixed relay, the sprint was alright, but then bad again in the pursuit. I’ve had a pretty up and down season so I wasn’t really sure what to expect coming into these championships, but anything can happen in an individual.”

Sean Doherty [P] Nordic Focus
“I am very proud to put together a strong shooting performance with the challenges presented by the weather,” said Doherty with two penalties at three seconds behind Nordgren. “I am very happy for Leif as well. Great to see him showcase his shooting skill. It bodes well for the relay.”

Scott Gow was the top Canadian in 26th with three penalties. The USA’s Jake Brown was 68th with seven penalties, Alex Howe was 84th with six missed targets, Aidan Millar (Can) finished 93rd with seven penalties, Christian Gow (Can) did not finish. Jules Burnotte (Can) did not start.
