Catching Up With Kris Freeman in Muonio – Season Starts This Weekend

by Peter Graves

November 16, 2013 (Muonio, Finland) – Muonio is often considered to be the area with the longest ski season in Finland and is located high above the Arctic Circle in the western corner of the country. They already have ample snow, and the conditions for the weekend call for either snow or a mixture of sleet.

It’s been about two weeks since we talked with Kris Freeman in a special edition of “Talkin’ with the Gravy Train,” and when we spoke, he was to depart the next day for Finland.

Freeman has been hard at work training with the Maine Winter Sports Center in Muonio since November.  The skiing has been very good with 6km of man-made trails and in additional 15km of natural snow skiing. SkiTrax chatted with him to see how things were shaping up for the start of the 2013/14 season.

“I trained 21 hours last week with a couple sets of intervals,” said Freeman. “Will Sweetser and I have tested a lot of skis in preparation for the upcoming races this weekend. I will be competing in the 10km classic on Saturday and the 15km skate on Sunday.”
