Job Description: Cross Country Canada’s strategic plan incorporates the goal of building – as part of a comprehensive sport system for cross-country skiing – a high performance system of national scope and reach. The objectives of this high performance system are to empower elite athletes to reach their full potential and to permit Cross Country Canada to achieve international success. International success is defined as including the specific goal of placing Canadian cross-country skiers on the podium at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games. Cross Country Canada is seeking to hire a Director of High Performance who possesses the vision, passion and skill sets that are required to achieve success in this important undertaking.

The primary responsibilities of the Director of High Performance are to: provide leadership to Cross Country Canada’s high performance system; manage the development of Cross Country Canada positions, strategies, programs and policies within the high performance area of operations; and collaborate with other principal staff, volunteers, PSOs/TSOs and other agencies in the development and efficient operation of an effective sport system for cross-country skiing. The Director of High performance will work in Cross Country Canada’s national office, located at the Canmore Nordic Centre in Canmore, Alberta. The position reports and is accountable directly to the Executive Director. Detailed responsibilities include but are not limited to: providing leadership to the development and efficient operation of a high performance system for cross-country skiing; leading and supervising the National Ski Team and National Disabled Ski Team programs; managing outreach and inreach programs to optimize the impact of resources committed to high performance and create productive linkages between CCC’s high performance and development systems; and supervising CCC’s high performance staff of coaches and technicians.

The Director of High Performance will manage an operational budget of approximately two million dollars. Candidates for this position must have outstanding capabilities in leadership, planning and budgeting, communication (verbal and written), human resource management, working with staff/volunteer teams in a virtual environment and building relationships based on mutual respect and inclusion. Essential attributes include a resolute commitment to performance excellence, personal integrity and 1 accountability, high personal work standards, athlete-centredness and fairness and equity. Experience and a successful track record in the Canadian sport system at the management level are highly desirable. A background in the sport of cross-country skiing or other Nordic sport at the national and international levels is also highly desirable. Functional bilingualism is an asset. The compensation package of pay and benefits for this position will be based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The salary range begins at $70,000 per year.
