by skitrax.com

January 23, 2008 РThe COC has applied for English and French language television channels РCanadian Amateur Sports Network (CASN) and le R̩seau du sport amateur canadien (RSAC) Рto the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The proposed national networks would provide exposure and funding for both winter and summer sports.

The Toronto Star reported that it got hold of an internal COC document, which stated the COC is applying for a digital subscription channel that would cost subscribers 60 cents per month. Eighty percent of the revenue would go towards funding amateur sports in Canada. Most digital subscription channels charge less than 10 cents monthly, but according to a COC-backed study, over 60 percent of Canadians would pay the steep fee, if it would fund amateur athletes.

The COC plans to announce the details of its application for these ground-breaking English and French amateur sport television networks on Wednesday, January 30.
