Cross Country BC Training Camp Report – Powder Days in the Okanagan

release by Cross Country BC

December 10, 2015 (Vernon, BC) – Cross country ski athletes from around the province enjoyed fresh tracks over the weekend – who ever said a powder day had to be downhill. The large Teck Okanagan Regional Camp with over 60 athletes and 20 coaches in attendance was held at Silver Star Mountain Resort.

The camp began Friday evening with activities ranging from running, core strength and stretching, technique video analysis, goal setting and games. Saturday morning conditions were superb for a long classic ski, with technique work and video. Skiers made it to the Summit and onto Alder Point while demonstrating great focus on improving their techniques.

Lunch was appreciated by all in order to fuel up for the afternoon’s skating session. The groups headed to the knoll where conditions were great for drills, as well as downhill slalom practice, and even head-to-head ski cross style races on the Silver Queen slopes. Despite 30km of skiing for some groups, there was still energy in the evening for the always competitive ‘hot tub dash’ and to take in the Silver Star Light-Up festival.

Lots of snow continued to fall on Sunday morning, making for an ‘uphill powder day’. Younger groups did a time trial and fun relays on the knoll. Older skiers raced around Howie’s Loop in a team sprint event. The camp wrapped up on Sunday after lunch once everyone pitched in to dig out the vehicles which had all been buried by the snow.

Organizers of the event would like to thank all of the coaches for working so hard with the kids to improve their skills while making the weekend so much fun. A big thanks also goes out to Teck Resources Limited and Cross Country BC for making this camp possible.
