Dartmouth Edges out UVM for Lead on Day 1 of Bates Carnival

release by Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association
January 23, 2009 (Bethel, ME) – Dartmouth used its Nordic skiing depth in the men’s 10k and women’s 5k classic to beat out the University of Vermont by six points. The Catamounts had superior scores in the Alpine giant slalom section with 117 and 115 points for men’s and women’s teams compared to 79 and 96 for the Big Green but lost out in the overall Nordic skiing points, with a sum total of 193 points compared to Dartmouth’s 256 points.

Leading the Dartmouth charge was Ida Sargent with her first place finish netting the team a total of fifty points, taking advantage of the new NCAA scoring system which assigns a three point bonus for winning. Dartmouth’s women’s alpine results were a mirror of their Nordic, with Courtney Hammond taking the win over Middlebury’s Mattie Ford and netting another 50 points.

Continuing the symmetry on the podium, the University of Vermont took victory in both the men’s alpine and Nordic events. Schussing down the slopes into first place was freshman David Donaldson, a product of the Ontario Provincial Ski Team. His victory was matched by another Catamount, Juergen Uhl, who powered to an eighteen second victory over Dartmouth runner up Dakota Blackhorse-Von Jess.

While the top two titans battled at the top there was plenty of action to be found further down the leader board. Middlebury placed third with 391 total points while showing the depth of their Women’s teams, both posting 115 points. They were followed by Williams and the University of New Hampshire with 334 and 328 points respectively. Host institution Bates placed sixth, showing some hope on the Men’s Nordic side with a best ever fifth place finish by Sam Evans-Brown.
