Dartmouth’s Randall Wins 10km Free Race at NCAA Championships

March 6, 2008 (Bozeman, MT) – Dartmouth’s Glenn Randall skied to victory Wednesday in the 10km freestyle event at the NCAA Skiing Championships at Bohart Ranch.

Randall became Dartmouth’s first national skiing champion in 41 years, upsetting a number of Western skiers including the University of Colorado’s Kit Richmond and the University of Utah’s Snorri Einarsson, the top two qualifiers from the Rocky Mountain Division.

Marius Korthauer of the University of Alaska Fairbanks finished second Wednesday, and Jesper Ostensen of the University of Colorado took third. Rounding out the top three Eastern finishers after Randall were Sylvan Ellefson of Bates, in fourth, and Simeon Hamilton of Middlebury, in thirteenth.

The University of Colorado took the team victory on Wednesday with 89 points. The University of Utah finished second with 80 points, and Denver University took third with 74 points.

Colby College finished first among Eastern teams with 62 points, good enough for sixth overall. They were followed by Middlebury in seventh place with 60 points and Dartmouth in a tie for eighth with 58 points.

The University of Colorado took the top two spots in the women’s five kilometer freestyle event, with Maria Moe Grevsgaard earning the win. Team mate Lenka Palanova took second, and the University of Denver’s Annelise Bailly finished third.

Top Eastern finishers in the women’s race were Alexa Turzian of Middlebury in fourth, Rosie Brennan of Dartmouth in sixth, and Cassidy Edwards of Middlebury in eleventh.

Colorado University took the team victory in the women’s race as well, earning 97 points. Northern Michigan University women finished second with 95 points, and Dartmouth finished third with 83 points.

Rounding out the top three Eastern schools in women’s team scoring were Middlebury in fourth place with 81 points and the University of Vermont in eleventh place with 33 points.

Despite Glenn Randall’s win, defending national champion Dartmouth College is currently tied for third in overall team standings. The University of Colorado leads team standings after the first day of competition with 186 points. Northern Michigan University is currently second with 153 points, and the University of Denver, Dartmouth, and Middlebury all finished with 141 points.
