Doping News – FIS Anti-Doping Program Update, 4-Year Ban Sends Warning

May 04, 2012 FIS continues to fight cheating through doping in the sport of skiing and snowboarding with out-of-competition testing remaining a major focus of the FIS Anti-Doping program.

During the 2011/2012 competition season, FIS performed as many as 2’531 out-of-competition tests, including blood and urine tests (244 with EPO analysis) as well as blood passport samples.

These numbers include the pre-competition blood controls that were carried out at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships.

Additionally 316 in-competition tests were completed by FIS at World Cup events, whereby 170 samples were additionally analyzed for EPO.

In addition, a large number of doping controls were carried out by the National Anti-Doping Agencies both in- and out-of-competition.

Dope Ban Sends Warning

A landmark four-year ban of a track-and-field athlete using the biological passport system signals a warning ahead of the London Olympics that has been lauded by the head of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Agency president John Fahey said the sanctioning of Portuguese Olympic marathon runner Helder Ornelas was a ”win” that should deter prospective cheats in the countdown to the Games.

It is the first time a track-and-field athlete has been banned for doping based solely on results from the profiling program that monitors changes in athletes’ blood over time. If the use of prohibited methods or substances are suspected by the blood test samples, athletes are target tested…
