March 22, 2012 (Mont Ste-Anne, QC) – The Juniors were also on snow at Mont Ste-Anne on Day 5 of the Haywood Ski Nationals on the 1.4km Sprint course as Sebastien Townsend of Nakkertok claimed the men’s title while Maya Macissac-Jones of Rocky Mountain Racers took home the women’s crown.

Junior Men 1.4km Sprints
Under changing skies as grey clouds rolled in and temperatures started to drop slightly, Dartmouth College’s David Sinclair upset the maple leaf run on first places by taking the final. The gold medal would go to the first Canadian though and that was Sebastien Townsend of Nakkertok. He was followed by Alexis Turgeon of Skinouk who took the silver while Geoffrey Richards of Black Jack was the bronze medalist. Richards’ teammate Julien Locke was the fourth Canadian; Knute Johsgaard of Whitehorse was the fifth Canadian while Raphael Couturier of Skibec won the B Final and thus took the sixth spot for the top Canadians.

Junior Women 1.4km Sprints
After a couple of hundred qualifying male and female skiers followed by quarter, semi and final heats for Open Men and Women, and then Junior Men, the Junior Women were left with a rather rutted course which made for some spectacular crashes.

In the qualifications Maya Macissac-Jones of Rocky Mountain Racers had the fastest time with a 3:27.02, which put her a phenomenal ninth overall and 9.87 seconds behind Chandra Crawford. Macissac-Jones stayed out in front through her heats and into the final to take the gold.

Add an ImageRebecca Reid of Black Jack who was just over seven seconds slow than Macissac in the qualifiers claimed the silver while AnneMarie Comeau of Mount Ste-Anne scooped bronze. Janelle Greer of Whitehorse, who had the second fastest qualification time for Junior Women was fourth while teammate Daria Beatty took fifth. Cendrine Browne of Fondeurs Laurentides took the sixth spot.
