July 05, 2018 – The Russian doping scandal that erupted following the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics made headlines again as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has filed an appeal against a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that overturned sanctions against Russian cross-country skier Alexander Legkov, reports Inside the Games.

The sanctions against Legkov, and 27 other Russian athletes, were removed by the CAS prior to the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics which initiated the controversy. The original IOC sanctions cost Legkov the gold and silver medals he won at the Sochi 2014 Games but were reinstated after the CAS released the full reasoning behind their decision to remove the sanctions.

There will likely be additional IOC appeals once the CAS releases more full decisions regarding the IOC’s sanctions against the remaining 27 Russian athletes.

Legkov, 35, has since retired from the sport.
