Jewett Wins, McKeever 3rd at 2010 MTB Nationals in Canmore

by Jesse Winter

July 18, 2010 (Canmore, Alberta) – Former Canadian NST and 2010 Olympian Gord Jewett returned to his cycling roots on Sunday, winning the 2010 Canadian MTB National Championships Masters 30-39 Men’s category at the Canmore Nordic Center.   Jewett, riding for the Rundle Mountain Cycling Club, broke away with Graham Torrie (Bike Bros) on the first lap and lead the rest of what was arguably the most competitive field of the day.

Another former NST skier and Olympian, Robin McKeever, was fighting hard the whole race to close the gap on Jewett and Torrie, but ultimately had to settle for third. He was still grinning as he crossed the finish line however, perhaps buoyed by the little bit of fun he had carving corners and spraying spectators with dust on the technical Laundry Chutes descent.

While they rode together for nearly the entire race, Torrie finally started to show some fatigue on the final lap. “He was starting to yo-yo a bit on the last lap,” said Jewett. “I was feeling good, so I just upped the pace a little. It wasn’t a conscious attack, it was more that he cracked and I didn’t.”

Full results from today’s race, including all age and skill categories, are available here.
