June 11, 2013 (Muskoka, ON) – Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club is located in the stunningly beautiful Muskoka district comprised of lakes and rolling Canadian Shield.  The Club is located within Arrowhead Provincial Park Nordic Ski Centre a 5 minute drive from the downtown of Huntsville.  The park has 42 kilometer machine groomed ski trails catering to both skate and classic techniques.  The club has a skills development program with over 225 young participants, 30 youth racers and has played host to numerous provincial events and a national level event.  Huntsville is a community of 20,000 approximately 2 hours north of Toronto with impressive year round recreational, cultural and educational amenities.

We are looking for a passionate ski coach to lead the ambitious growth of our club’s program and help our athletes build confidence in technical skill and athleticism to participate appropriately at the various stages of the Canadian Sport For Life (CS4L).  This coach will also be the mentor to other coaches who are developing and encourage them to the next levels of their coaching education.

Duties:

Reporting to the Board of Directors and Program Committee, the Head Club Coach is responsible for providing leadership in the successful implementation, delivery and enhancement of the Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club programs to ensure athlete success at local, regional, provincial and/or national level events.  The coach will work collaboratively in organizing activities, fundraising, developing and managing positive relations with media, ski industry and the ski community.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

– Be a Leadership Facilitator to instruct the Competency Based NCCP Cross Country Ski technical programs – Community and Competitive Stream;
– Teach Cross Country Canada’s Technical coaching programs for Arrowhead Nordic Ski coaches who are attaining National Coaching Certification Program Community and Competitive Stream, on an agreed schedule, additional paid service at Cross Country Canada’s instructor rate.
– Discuss and assist coaches in designing training programs for the Skills Development Program, Track Attack, and Athlete Development Programs,  (key factors, drill information).  Provide documentation at year end showing both disciplines (classic/skate).
– Create a budget for the treasurer;
– Provide and monitor team/ individual training program for selected athletes providing documentation of year- long programs.
– Run coaches meetings at the beginning of the season.  Outline expectations to the coaches.
– Coach no more than 5 club athletes
– Run and/or assist in two training camps ‘opened’ to Track Attack and Skills Development Program
– Teach Assistant coaches and athletes to use web based training journals (ie. iLog).
– Maintain Athlete Development Program website in conjunction with the website developer.
– Continue to recommend and purchase videos, books, manuals, CD ROMs, and web resources for the ANSC library.
– Represent the club on technical matters in discussion with the Division, Cross Country Ontario and Cross Country Canada. Network with other head club coaches.
– Set up a “Talent ID” system that will give talented young club members the opportunity to move up the levels
– Monitor and assess club coaches with verbal and written feedback throughout the season using a tool developed by the Program Committee.
– Supervise the growth of volunteer coaches and report to the board.
– Complete educational components required by Cross Country Canada to stay current and valid;
– Write grant proposals to funding groups to supplement honorarium for sustainability;
– Liaise with local elementary and secondary students to recruit.
– Forward nominations (report) with testimonials to the Local Volunteer Recognition Award
– Prepare Five Year Plan on coaching development – advise and update
– Work with Cross Country Canada and Cross Country Ontario on coaching development.
– Provide athletes and parents assessment tools for the season and training camp.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have a NCCP Level 3 certification or NCCP Competition Coaching advanced (T2T), and hold a First Aid-CPR “C” certificate. You have demonstrated an ability to recruit, retain and lead athletes to a standard of excellence.

You have demonstrated strong supervisory skills, superior communication skills and are known for your strong team leadership and community engagement. Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience in budget preparation, schedule development, team selection, competition preparation, season planning, and player development.

The successful candidate must be willing to work in a collaborative work environment and represent Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club in the community. Knowledge of the Cross Country Canada and Canada Sport For Life (CS4L) system is an asset.

This position requires a clear Criminal Records Check.

The coaches’ working hours vary according to team practices, races, camps, fundraising events and extensive overnight travel.  Contract runs from July 1, 2013 to April 30, 2013.
