Konopacke Inducted Into Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame

May 2, 2006 – Two-time Olympian and three-time U.S. ski jumping champion Mark Konopacke (Kingsford, MI) was among 10 people inducted Saturday night into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame.

Konopacke was named to the U.S. Olympic Team for the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, and ’92 Olympics in Albertville, France. He was 18th in the normal hill event and 42nd in the large hill in Calgary and did not compete in France. He also was on three World Championships teams.

He won the U.S. normal hill championship in 1983, ’88 and – the only time the national jumping title has been deadlocked – tied with Jim Holland for the championship at Eau Claire, Wis., in 1990. Konopacke, who graduated from Michigan State Univerity, also was bronze medalist in jumping at the 1983 World University Games in Sofia, Bulgaria.
