Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center’s 30th Winter Season Celebration!

release by Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center

November 3, 2005 (Benson, NY) – A celebration of Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center’s 30th winter season will take place on Sunday, December 30, 2007. A variety of exciting and fun-filled events will take place throughout the day at the Finnish-flavored southern Adirondack vacation center.

Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center first opened during the 1978-79 winter season. Olavi Hirvonen, former U.S. Olympic skier, was the visionary who brought the award-winning resort to fruition. He designed and constructed the 50km trail system and renovated 12 buildings which include ten housekeeping cottages, a two-story lodge and separate restaurant facility. The resort has experienced three decades of growth and hosts thousands of winter recreational participants each season.

To commemorate the resort’s 30th winter season, a variety of events will be held including horse drawn sleigh rides from noon-4:00pm. The rides, approximately 30 minutes in length, will follow a round trip route from the resort’s Tuulen Tupa Grill to Woods Lake. Rides will be offered free of charge to the resort’s lodging guests and to anyone purchasing a facility use pass.

Winter enthusiasts are encouraged to dress up to enter the day’s Retro Ski Gear and Clothing Contest! The individual sporting clothing and gear most accurately resembling a skier from 1978 will win a Lapland Lake gift card valued at $100.00. The gift card may be applied toward shop ski shop purchases, equipment rentals, overnight accommodations, lessons or food service. Participants are asked to gather in front of the resort’s “Finnish Line” Ski Shop at 2pm for judging.

Immediately following the costume contest, an exciting Finnish Wife-Carrying Contest will be held. Participants will carry their “wives” through the snow in pursuit of a grand prize of 30 bottles of beer! Participants must be a minimum of 21 years of age. “Wives” may be any willing female!

The resort’s two domesticated reindeer will be on hand to visit with customers.

Lapland Lake’s trails and other facilities are open to the general public from 9:00am – 4:30pm. Cost of a facility use pass is $16.00 for adults and $8.00 for juniors ages 6-15. Children under age 6 are free of charge.

A complete cross country ski and snowshoe facility, Lapland Lake offers fully equipped rental and retail shops, a comfortable warming lodge with snack bar, a trailside restaurant and overnight accommodations in private housekeeping cottages.

The trail system has 50km of trails for all ability levels. 38km are marked, mapped and snowcat groomed with trackset and skating lanes; 12km are ungroomed, marked, mapped snowshoe trails. Ski lessons for all ability levels are offered daily by the resort’s PSIA certified instructional staff.

Other activities include ice-skating on an outdoor pond, tubing and sledding on two junior hills, kicksledding, night skiing on Saturday evenings (beginning 12/29/07) and wilderness ski touring.

Lapland Lake has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council’s Private Sector Tourism Partnership Award; Best XC Ski Resort in the Mid Atlantic Region and Best XC Ski Resort for Families, Best XC Ski Resort Poll; and Top Ten XC Ski Resort Catering to Families, xc ski resorts.com.
