November 06, 2014 (Caribou, ME) – If there was any doubt that the seasons were changing, this last nor’easter should have solidly confirmed that winter is on the way in.  While many people across Maine see this as a time to head inside and hunker down for the long, cold months ahead, we’re busy as ever gearing up for another beautiful season outdoors.  With that in mind, check out these four brief program updates you should know about from the Maine Winter Sports Center!

1. For friends and fans of the MWSC Racing Program…
Our cross-country and biathlon teams are gearing up for a fast and furious racing season, and with many athletes poised to qualify for national and international teams, we need your support.  We’ll be holding a fundraiser for MWSC Olympic Development Team athletes Saturday, November 8th from 5-7PM at the Portland Art Gallery on 154 Middle Street in Portland. We have the funding to support our athletes training and competition schedules in the US. Your support will help ensure every athlete that qualifies to compete at World Junior Champions, World Cups, or any other international competition can do so. Come and enjoy light hors d’oeuvres, mingle with the athletes and see why we are so proud of our Team.
2. For kids…
The MWSC Healthy Hometowns Nordic ski lease program aims to break down one of the biggest barriers to outdoor recreation: affordable access to quality equipment. The equipment used in the program is introductory-level cross-country ski equipment designed to serve youth from kindergarten through 8th grade. The Nordic ski lease program allows families to become involved in the sport without needing to constantly purchase new equipment as kids grow. The Healthy Hometowns Ski Lease Program gets close to 1500 kids around Maine on skis every winter, and this winter you can get your kids on skis too.  Learn more here.
3. For adults…
Start your ski season off right by getting on snow early and getting tuned up with the coaches of the Maine Winter Sports Center. This month the Active Maine Project, MWSC’s active adult program, kicks things off with a weekend on snow in the heart of Aroostook County. While others are fighting in lines at shopping malls, you can be getting your gliding legs underneath you with great people, great food and world-class coaching. The weekend camp will include a mix of instructional clinics, presentations from the pros, one-on-one feedback, and of course, lots of skiing! One-day and weekend options are available.  More info is available here.
And for those hoping to join us in the Gaspe this March, be sure to check out trip details on our website.
4. For high school students…
Grab a pack and a pair of skis and head outside this February break with an awesome group of people to explore the snow-covered peaks and valleys of New York’s legendary Adirondack Mountains. This winter the Adventure Initiative Program will take a group of high school students to the High Peaks region of New York, home to over thirty peaks greater than 4000′ in elevation. These mountains create the perfect winter playground with some incredible ski touring opportunities. As we gain comfort on skis, we will also be learning and practicing essential winter backcountry skills, and learning the core values and skills needed for adventure and leadership. With deep snow, amazing scenery, and fantastic people, this trip is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience. Learn more here.
Don’t let the snow and cold temperatures be your excuse to stay inside this coming winter.  Get outdoors with the Maine Winter Sports Center.  We have programs for all ages and all abilities, and we want to share the outdoors with you.
