March 17, 2012 (Mont Sainte-Anne, QC) – Nakkertok skiers  Perianne Jones and Alana Thomas, have captured the Open Women’s team sprint title at the Haywood Ski Nationals, with the University of Vermont 2nd (ineligible for Canadian Championship medals)  and Canmore Nordic winning the silver in a close fought contest with Foothills Nordic.

In the men’s open race Whitehorse and Foothills fought neck and neck all through the race, with Graham Nishikawa posting the fastest lap times. Foothills were represented by Jesse Cockney and Brent McMurtry and Whitehorse led out with David Greer.

With 40 metres to go it looked like gold would go to the Yukon, as they had a 5 metres lead. Unfortunatelly for Whitehorse Graham Nishikawa stumbled on a wet spot in the soft sugary snow, allowing Brent McMurtry to sneak by and claim gold in a photofinish.  Nakkertok claimed bronze following a close battle with the Whitehorse 2 team.

Lakehead University captured the first gold medal at the 2012 Haywood Ski Nationals, with a victory in the University/College women’s team sprint competition in downtown Quebec City.  The team of Alannah MacLean and Andrea Lee powered to a 21 second victory over hometown Laval University, that edged Carleton for 2nd by 2 seconds.

In the men’s race Laval triumphed thanks to the efforts of of Mathieu Fortin and Vincent Roseberry,  with Lakehead University claiming silver and bronze.

In the Challenge relay competition Nakkertok claimed the Canadian championship gold medal, with twin sisters Katherine and Emilie Stewart-Jones. They lost the race in a photo finish with Rocky Mountain Racers represented by Maya MacIsaac-Jones, and Marte Haakenstad Braaten. RMR  were ineligible for the Canadian title as Braaten is a Norwegian citizen.  2nd place went to Foothills Nordic and 3rd to Skibec.

In the men’s Challenge relay BC came out on top with Hollyburn capturing gold and Larch Hills silver. 3rd place went to the hometown club of Skibec.
