New Organization to Lead Coaching Development in Canada

provided by the CAC

July 4, 2005 – The Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is entering the final stage of a transition that will see the emergence of a new organization amalgamating CAC and the National Coaching Certification Council (NCCC).

“After so much discussion and debate in recent years, it is gratifying that the process is coming to fruition and with such a positive outcome,” said CAC chair Peggy Gallant of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. “There can be no doubt that this exciting development will result in a new direction for coach education in Canada, with a dynamic new culture and expanded partnerships.

It is important to note that the amalgamation is supported by the Federal/Provincial/Territorial governments responsible for sport.”

Operating under a revitalized and streamlined mandate, the new organization will continue to implement a leading-edge national coach and sport education program – the National Coaching Certification Program – tailored to meet the needs of sport participants from the playground to the podium.

Responsibilities will include establishment of national standards for coaching and sport leader education programs, development and implementation of educational programs and resource materials, and certification.

“The NCCC has been a major contributor to the decision-making process that led to this very important step for coaching in Canada,” said NCCC chair Wendy Bedingfield of Halifax. “We are eager for the implementation to move forward and predict that the impact will quickly and positively be felt across the country. This is indeed a major milestone in the evolution of coaching in Canada.”

A new Board of Directors for the organization will be struck in September following a call for nominations during the summer.

CAC is a not-for-profit amateur sport organization with the mandate to improve the effectiveness of coaching across all sports and at all levels of the sport system.
