February 03, 2014 (Cantley, QC) – Race Day 2 at the Haywood Eastern Canadian Championships saw colder weather with a significant snowfall expected for the afternoon and evening. The men’s 15k free event was a 3-lap race, and as the races were underway the snow was falling, with an expected accumulation of 15 to 20 centimetres.
Graham Nishikawa of Whitehorse surged ahead on the first lap and gradually built up more time per lap, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Raphaël Couturier of Skibec. Third place went to Michael Somppi of Lappe.
Colin Foley of Nakkertok handily won the Jr. Men’s category with a 20+-second advantage on Victor Hopper of Big Thunder and Matthew Saurette of Rocky Mountain Racers.
In the women’s event Andrea Dupont of Rocky Mountain Racers built up a commanding lead over the first half of the race for a comfortable win over Zoe Roy of Foothills Nordic. Hardwood’s Erin Tribe edged ahead of Alannah Maclean of Walden by .3 seconds to claim 3rd.
In the junior woman’s race Sadie White of Big Thunder was the victor with Nakkertok’s Alexandra Slobodian 2nd and Ember Large from Edmonton Nordic 3rd.
