Nordic Meisters Kicks Off at Great Glen Trails

release by Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center
January 9, 2008 (Pinkham Notch, NH) – Nordic Meisters began its thirteenth season yesterday on a balmy day at Great Glen Trails, and the new non-timed category was a success. Even with temperatures in the high 50’s, seventy-six skiers challenged themselves on the Nordic Meister course in the opening week of the largest weekly cross country ski race series in the country.

The December snows allowed for great ski conditions throughout the course albeit spring-like conditions. So far this season, the ages of the Nordic Meisters range from 7 to 76.

In its first week, the non-timed category drew 9 competitors, and many more positive reviews. Not only did the non-timed competitors enjoy the new format, but many timed racers also said they were going to speak to friends who may be interested in the new format.

“We had hoped this new non-timed category would bring out people who enjoy skiing, but don’t enjoy racing,” said Great Glen Trails General Manager Howie Wemyss. “And this is exactly what we saw in the first week. We hope to see more participants in the coming weeks.”

Nordic Meisters runs every Tuesday (except February 19) for eight weeks ending on March 4, 2008. Participants race against the clock on the 5km Nordic Meister course or 2.5 kilometer short course in the Skate and/or Classic category. The series consists of eight weeks of timed runs with the six best times selected for series-end standings. The timing building is open and available between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:45 pm. All participants must check in with the starters prior to starting timed runs and all runs must be completed by 4:00 pm. Registration is still open.

An awards party will be held on March 15 at the end of the series with the top three skiers in each class awarded trophies, while all participants completing six out of eight weeks are entered into a prize raffle. Non-timed skiers completing the required weeks will still qualify for the prize raffle.

Despite the current warming trend, Great Glen Trails currently has all its terrain open for skiing and snowshoeing. For a complete snow conditions report, visit www.greatglentrails.com.
