North American VASA Introduces Fatbike Race – Feb. 8

North American VASADecember 17, 2013 (Traverse City, MI) – In its 38th year of racing, the North American VASA welcomes Fatbikes to its 2014 Festival of Races! Fatbikes are one of the newest means of enjoying the great outdoors during the winter and the VASA is excited to include them in all the fun and festivities on a snowy day in February. The “King VASA Fatbike Race” will be held on Saturday Feb. 8th at 2:00pm and will make one loop on the VASA Pathway for approximately 27kilometers of beautifully groomed trails. The race will start after all of the ski races are to minimize any skier-biker passing.

The race starts at Timber Ridge Resort and follow Riley’s Loop for the first half  then returns on the traditional VASA 27km loop. An aid station will be available approximately half ways along the route.

In conjunction with the race, a Fatbike Expo will be held at Timber Ridge on Friday Feb. 7th beginning at noon. Free demo rides will be available as well as opportunities to win cycling related door prizes. Expected bike shops presenting are Einstein Cycles, Brick Wheels, McClain Cycles, etc.

VASA board members who are event organizers for the Fatbike race are Michele Howard and Steve Andriese. They are both avid cycling competitors with years of experience in both cross country skiing and cycling events. Michele states ; “The Fatbike race is an opportunity for racers to compete in a world-class venue with state-of-the art grooming.” Andriese says “ This is a great opportunity to demonstrate that both skiers and fatbikers can co-exist and enjoy the amenities, energy and excitement offered by the North American VASA Festival of Races.”

Awards will be given immediately after the race for the fastest three male and female racers in the following categories:

Overall male and female winners, under 18, 18-45 and 45+.
