by Julie Melanson

November 16, 2012 (Beitostølen, Norway) – Norwegian star Petter Northug started his season off with a victory taking the 15km free men’s race today in Beitostølen. The season is officially underway in Europe with the Norwegian FIS races also starting today and continuing through the weekend.

Great snow and weather conditions saw Northug finish the 15km in 35:18.5, followed by Maurice Manificat of France in 35:34.2 with Norway’s Finn Hågen Krogh in 35:38.2. While the field was primarily Norwegian there were mostly French skiers and some Germans on the startline including lone British skier Andrew Musgrave.

As expected the Norwegian women dominated their field, taking the top 12 spots. The 10km free race was won by Therese Johaug with a time of 25:39.6 followed by Marit Bjørgen at 8.5 seconds behind with Ek Hagen at 52 seconds in third.

The World Cup arena for cross-country skiing at Beitostølen is considered one of Norway’s best. Tomorrow is the sprint classic followed by the 10km and 15km classic on Sunday with biathlon races in the afternoon both days.
