March 15, 2014 (Norway) – The 2014 Birkebeinerrennet has been cancelled due to high winds and storm force winds in the mountains according to notice on the event web site. “We apologize strongly but believe it is irresponsible to send participants of the mountains.”

“We apologize of course,” Silvie Amundsen, Sports Director, told NRK. “We have had ongoing assessments and it is not an easy decision to make. We hoped to buy some time at first, but it is now not justifiable. The race has only been canceled once before in 2007 when there were also strong winds over the mountains.”
