Poltoranin and Kowalczyk Take Sprint CL and 5/10km CL Wins in Muonio – Freeman 32nd, Blackhorse Von Jess 34th

November 16, 2013 (Muonio, Finland) – Kazakhstan’s Alexey Poltoranin continued his winning ways from last season where he recorded a career-best four World Cup victories taking the Sprint CL victory in Muonio, Finland on Friday as the 2013/14 season gets underway. Dakota Blackhorse Von Jess was the lone US skier placing 34th and did not advance to the finals – no Canadians competed.

In the women’s race Poland’s Justyna Kowalczyk stamped her supremacy on the field qualifying fastest and taking the final over Evgenia Shapovalova (Rus) in second and Julia Tikhonova (Rus) in third – no North American women raced.

Then in today’s 5km CL Kowalczyk proved unbeatable again as did Poltoranin in the men’s 10km CL race. The USA’s Kris Freeman is stretching his legs in Finland and finished just out of the points in 32nd, fellow Yank Sam Tarling was 96th while Canadian Brian McKeever was 134th with Eric Carleton in 185th.
