July 06, 2011 (Durban, South Africa) – South Korea’s PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee celebrated after being selected as the host city of the Games of the XXIII Winter Olympiad reports the Associated Press. Receiving 63 of the 95 votes cast Korea’s third-largest city won the landslide victory that saw Munich, Germany and Annecy, France, defeated. The selection was made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Durban, South Africa where it is holding its 123rd Session.

The Republic of Korea narrowly lost previous bids for the 2010 and 2014 Olympics and lasted hosted the Games in Seoul in 1988. “Koreans have been waiting for 10 years to host the Winter Games,” bid leader Cho Yang-ho told The Associated Press. “Now we have finally achieved our dream.” – read more HERE
