October 11, 2008 (Vladimir, Russia) – Olympic gold medalist Alexei Prokurorov, 44, was killed Friday after being hit by a car while crossing the road. At the 1988 Calgary Games Prokurorov won the 30km freestyle. He was also a member of the silver medal winning 4x10km Russian relay team. In all he participated at five Olympics the most recent being the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City.
