SkiVolution Monthly Newsletter – Youth Development

release by CXC

June 26, 2009 – CXC Youth Program is supporting new FIS SnowKidz campaign “Bring Children to Snow”. Similar to the book “Last Child in the Woods” written by Richard Louv the snow sport community is experiencing “Last Child in the Snow”. Kids are spending less time outdoors and enjoying activities in the snow. For the future of our children, sport and industry CXC Youth Program is developing a “Winter Activity Log” and award program that awards kids for getting outside and playing in the snow be it, skiing, sledding, skating, etc.. Logs will be available for 2009/2010 winter. For more information contact Everett Mayers, CXC Youth Program Director at everett@northboundorganics.com

Training
This time of the year we focus with our athletes on maximal strength. The goal here is to increase resistive load. There will be a decrease in the number of exer°©cises to primarily focus on the muscle and movements of the sport. Core strength will be maintained and plyometric activities will be increased. Ski specific strength also increases significantly.
Distance training is about 50% ski specific and 50% general. Level 3 (threshold) training still prevails in period three but both Level 3 and Level 4 training increase. Ski specificity in intensity training starts to become more important this time of the year. Distance and intensity training are generally more important than resis°©tance training, so resistance training complements distance and intensity training. This is why the CXC Elite Team does intensity in the morning and strength in the afternoon. Greater importance is put on the morning workout. This general premise complements the hot summer months well. Try to get out early to do your intensity in the morning and then head indoors for strength in the hot afternoons – if at all possible. Visit www.cxcacademy.com for training plan samples, technique videos and training advices.

Adaptive Program for Individuals with Disabilities
CXC will shortly be formally announcing the initiation of a complete regional cross country ski program for individuals with physical disabilities. The basic program will follow the successful CXC able bodied program including camps, clinics, and competitive opportunities with a direct pipeline to the US Adaptive Ski Team. The highlight of the program will be the development of Opportunity Centers throughout the Central Region. Clubs, ski areas, and parks will be offered free equipment on loan for stand up and sit skiing. Instructors and coaches identified with each location will receive instruction and certification for work with first time through advanced level participants. CXC Adaptive Program will team with the US Paralympics, USSA and the US Adaptive Ski Team, and all regional and national centers for the support of healthy lifestyles for individuals with physical disabilities. Inquiries and comments may be directed to Scott Wilson, CXC Adaptive Program Director at Wilson@cresthillresort.com
