Sovereign Lake World Cup A Resounding Success

provided by Donna Phillips

December 13, 2005 – Praise for the 2005 Sovereign Lake World Cup organizers has come from the highest levels of the sport governing bodies, sponsors, the Provincial government, local government, athletes, coaches and the community at large. The races themselves were executed in a virtually flawless manner under ideal conditions on great courses. The hospitality shown visitors was frequently commented on as well.

Approximately 4,000 people took in the races each day and 60 million television viewers in Europe, Japan and the United States were also able to share the “pure eXCitement” of the Sovereign Lake races.

A year ago the Organizing Committee announced a Mission Statement for the 2005 World Cup: to host financially viable and fiscally responsible World Cup races; to deliver a World Cup experience that not only meets but goes beyond the expectations of athletes, volunteers, government, sponsors and visitors; to create an event embraced by the community and entire Thompson-Okanagan region; to foster pride of accomplishment in volunteers; and to create a legacy of facility and athletic excellence. All of these goals have been achieved. The excitement generated by seeing Canadian Olympians Beckie Scott and Sara Renner scoop up three of the six medals for the women’s races was a bonus for spectators and organizers alike.
