Stratton BKL Camp Report

report by Janice Sabilia/Nensa.net
August 29, 2008 – Perfect weather and four action packed days led to lots of smiles for the 38 campers and 10 counselors at this year’s Stratton BKL camp. The camp started Thursday afternoon with a run, hip mobility, ski bounding and agility followed by a swim and dinner. The popular Camp Olympics kicked off after dinner with some fun and crazy events that tested quickness, coordination and balance.

After an early morning jog and breakfast on Friday; everyone hiked Bromley Mountain and enjoyed the view from the top and a swim on the way home. Following lunch; there were short talks on nutrition, training and waxing and more Olympic events, finishing with an exciting sprint relay.

Saturday gave everyone the chance to try roller skiing and do the infamous Stratton double pole test. The group was split by age and while one group roller skied, the other group played soccer, worked on agility and did core strength For the morning roller ski session, the campers were able to watch the Stratton Mountain School team doing long level three intervals and in the afternoon they were able to follow Andy Newell and the Stratton skiers doing some pick-ups. We had the most kids ever do the uphill double test and they all did a great job.

Between workouts, Andy entertained us with his stories during a question and answer session. In the evening it was the campers turn to entertain and they put on some great skits.

Sunday’s challenging adventure race started at the school and scaled Stratton Mountain. The teams worked together to find six checkpoints on their route to the top where they were rewarded with Power Bars and a ride down the gondola.
