December 01, 2012 (Kuusamo, Finland) – Bryan Fletcher from Steamboat Springs, CO, had a strong jump to open the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup in Kuusamo on Saturday, finishing 14th overall behind winner Jason Lamy Chappuis (FRA). Fletcher jumped to 11th and was in contention with the lead group in the cross-country leg before falling back on the final climb.
“Today was a solid day. I was more concerned about my cross-country race today than my jumping. I was able to hang tough but just didn’t quite have the legs for the final attack into the finish. I feel confident they will come in the next few weeks. I still feel my shape is just starting to ramp up,” said Fletcher post-race.
Dave Jarrett, Nordic Combined Head Coach was pleased with his performance. “Bryan had a good day, he was close to the podium group in cross-country with Jason [Lamy Chappuis] just off the front. The last climb up into the stadium was too much at the end for him but all in all it was a good day.
Bryan’s brother Taylor was disqualified for a jumping suit violation. In the team sprint on Sunday, Olympic medalists Billy Demong (Vermontville, NY) and Todd Lodwick (Steamboat Springs, CO) will team up with Team Fletcher.
“Going into tomorrow I am just looking to have some fun. It’s not every day you get to compete in a World Cup team with your younger brother. I’m definitely excited to share the experience with him. We are not expecting much in the results category but I feel like it’s a good opportunity to practice going into Val di Fiemme (World Championships) and I think it will be more then anything a fun race,” Fletcher added.
