February 5, 2008 (Madison, Wisconsin) – Garrott Kuzzy, fresh off his first World Cup top-10 result in Canada, and Karin Camenisch, who has moved up to the Swiss national team, clinched 2008 USSA SuperTour sprint titles on Sunday. There are no more SuperTour sprints this season.

Kuzzy, a 25-year-old Middlebury College grad, captured the classic technique sprint on the final day of the 2008 Capitol Square Sprints. Sweden’s Kristina Strandberg was the women’s victor but by finishing fifth, Camenisch cemented the sprint title.

In the sprint points, Camenisch squeaked past Martin Stursova of the Czech Republic, 196-191. Third place in the final sprint standings went to Lindsay Williams of the U.S. Ski Team. Kuzzy is the men’s sprint champ with 139 points to 124 for Team CXC mate Brian Gregg with Andy Newell, who won the two SuperTour events he entered during nationals, in third place.

As an indication of why the sprints have become a marquee stop on the USSA SuperTour schedule each season, some 35,000 spectators watched during the weekend. Snow is trucked in from elsewhere and spread on city streets near Wisconsin’s Capitol.

Sunday, Kuzzy nipped Team Gregg, who also made his World Cup debut last month in Canmore, Alberta. Third place went to Alaskan Anders Haugen with Bart Dengel fourth.

In the women’s CL sprint, Strandberg topped Lindsey Dehlin with Canadian Emily Nishiwaka third and Williams fourth.

Saturday, the freestyle technique team sprints were held with pulsating, race-horse action in the tag-team format. Camenisch and Czech Martina Stursova, skiing for Team Rossignol, defeated Dehlin and Williams by 14 seconds with a time of 15:55.60. Kristina Owens and Johanna Winter completed the podium.

Alaskans and Team Rossi’s James Southam and Haugen handily took the men’s team sprint in 17:52.7. The Factory Team’s Andrey Golovko of Kazakhstan and Lars Flora, another Alaskan, were the runners-up with Gregg and Kuzzy five second back.

Saturday night – as part of the Madison Winter Festival, there also was the annual attempt to set a 100-metre world record. Competitors in the U.S. 100m were ranked by the better of two 100m sprints. Camenisch was the fastest woman in 16:32 while Kevin Hochtl, also of Team Rossignol, was the men’s winner again (13:73). But neither was a record time.
