Swedish Flash – New Innovative Racing Pole Basket for Swedish XC Ski Team

release by One Way Sport
November 15, 2010 – The Swedish Cross-country Team has developed a new type of cross-country ski pole basket in partnership with Marcus Leijon and Mikael Svaren at Vintersportcentrum Östersund. The Swedish team’s goal for the past 12 months has been to design a high performance cross-country ski pole basket to support their racers.

The exclusive new basket features a unique design built with extra light material – under 9 grams each! The basket’s new shape offers fast and efficient contact with the snow and allows skiers to maintain their high poling pace and control.

The new basket has been developed exclusively for the members of the Swedish Ski Team and will support them during the next World Cups until the Nordic World Championships in Oslo. The basket is not available for sale at retail stores.

One Way Sport has joined the project to build the moulds, consulting in using the lightest materials and producing the XC basket for the team, dubbed “The Swedish Flash.”

The initial tests of the baskets during races in Bruksvallarna, Sweden this past weekend have been a great success.

Swedish Ski Team members have been very positive about the new innovation and the new baskets have found fans among Ana Haag, Anders Södergren, Mats Larsson, and especially Johan Olson. These are Olson’s observations: “More support and more direct when the basket hit the snow. Lighter and still you get more power out of it. You get the power immediately when you hit the snow because it does “pack” the snow at once.”

I’m sure when it comes to equipment that anything new has to be available to all skiers and it their choice as to whether they use it or not.
Also, FIS has a new equipment process/regulation/rules that any thing like these new pole baskets would have to be processed through.
I have a feeling the Swedes will run into some problems getting them into FIS sanctioned events.

I think Marty`s comments are right on, as they usually are! I would also add that I beleive a minimum of said product also has to be available at retail! So One Way will have to offer a production run somewhere.

It will be cool to see a photo after this weekends races!
