by Gerry Rideout/Menihek Nordic Ski Club

The 28th Great Labrador Loppet, sponsored by Provincial Airlines Ltd andco-sponsored by the Iron Oer company of Canada, took place yesterdaySaturday, March 29th with just under 200 participants. Tryingconditions prevailed with 15 cm of snow falling and threating rain. OurPisten Bully could not keep up with it, but the trail was ready beforestart of Loppet. One consolation was that it was not cold. The most interesting point was Mike Dyon of Southern Ontario draftingbehind Alf Parsons for all of the 54k event and passing him in the lasthalf kilometer. Their time was 2hrs and 59 mins, just a few secondsseparted them. It was another good Loppet with people from Nfld stayingover from the Provincials the week before. There as a contingent from HappyValley -Gooosebay, folks from USA (Chris Dorion and group drove in 20hrs.), and participants from Ontario, Quebec, NS and NB and even someAustralians. George LeFeuvre, world renown track setter was also on hand including ColinJardine, developer of Menihek Nordic trails and World Cup organizer, JudgeBruce Le Grow, President of Cross Country Nfld & Labrador and Jack White ,President of the Canadian Masters Association. The weather the day priorto the loppet was beautiful sunshine similar to what it is here day. In a day or so the Loppet results will posted on our web sitewww.crrstv.net/~menihek… happy trails.
