Top Skiers to Contest in Hamar

release by FIS

August 17, 2011 (Hamar, Norway) – One week after succesful Toppidrettsveka and FIS Rollerski World Championships in Aure/Kristiansund, top Norwegian athletes will meet again at another roller skiing event – the Kirkebakken Grand Prix at Hamar.

Organizers of the Kirkebbaken Grand Prix will celebrate the event’s tenth edition, which was established in 2002. The Kirkebbaken (Church Hill) Grand Prix has gained a solid reputation for being spectator-friendly and Hamar’s downtown core.

A 200m uphill sprint requires explosive strength, speed and especially proper technique. Thousands of spectators have gathered annually to follow the event and organizers expect 5,000 roller skiing fans to show up next weekend. Norwegian Cross-Country skiing superstars such as Petter Northug, Mari Bjoergen, Therese Johaug and Øystein Pettersen are expected to take part in the rollerskiing show.

“This competition is an excellent promotion of skiing. Organizers have built up a traditional event,” praised the organization chief of Norwegian Cross-Country skiing Åge Skinstad.

Norwegians will not be the only top athletes to show at Hamar. Interesting and exciting competition is expected as Finland’s Riita-Liisa Roponen and Aino-Kaisa Saarinen will challenge Therese Johaug and Marit Bjoergen.
