Trapp Family Lodge Celebrates 40 Years

release by Trapp Family Lodge
October 14, 2008 (Stowe, VT) – As the leaves begin to fall and the crisp autumn air evokes thoughts of a snowy winter, Trapp Family Lodge is gearing up for its most exciting season yet. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the continent’s first cross-country ski center. From January 6-11, 2009, the Trapp Family Lodge welcomes guests and locals to a celebratory week of special events including cross-country ski clinics, an exceptional 40th anniversary ski and stay package, festive parties at the Slayton Pasture Cabin, and more.

A few of the highlighted events include:
– Each day throughout the week, a different member of the famed von Trapp Family will take guests on a guided, specialized cross-country ski tour, illuminating different distinct aspects and features of the property and its storied history. Excursions will include an awe-inspiring backcountry trek with Sam von Trapp; a historical and ecological discovery of the 2,400 acres with President Johannes von Trapp; a fitness-focused hill climb with Kristina von Trapp; and a light leisurely ski with Lynne von Trapp.

– The January 10th Women’s Day Clinic is a ladies-only event that will allow women of all ages and skill to come together to share in their interest and love of cross-country skiing. An outstanding staff of instructors will share tips and tricks with participants, who’ll warm their feet fireside at the cozy après ski bonfire party just outside the Lodge following their day on the trails.

– The jovial Vermont Ski Museum Antique Classic Ski Race and Tour is sure to bring visitors from far and wide on January 11. Fun will be had by all as skiers navigate Trapp Family Lodge’s picturesque trails on authentic wooden skis, dressed in 1960s garb, striving to evoke their best ‘old time’ style.

Opened in the winter of 1968-69 by Johannes von Trapp, President of Trapp Family Lodge, the property’s touring Center marked the first time cross-country skiing enthusiasts could find trails, instruction, and equipment all offered in a single location. The simple early ski center has blossomed into an entire property boasting the most magnificent mountain cross-country skiing experience with a trail system that includes 60km of groomed trails and almost unlimited back-country trails.

And, while guests in 1968 had to rely on Mother Nature and a little winter luck to ski on fresh powder, modern-day skiers visiting Trapp Family Lodge’s Cross-country Ski Center can count on pristine conditions from December through April. Just last year the property installed a portable snowmaking system capable of covering miles of trails in a blanket of white, ensuring a great base all season long. One aspect of the Cross-country Ski Center that hasn’t changed with time is the warmth and hospitality of the Slayton Pasture Cabin, a favorite stop-over for skiers on longer treks. “The cabin” serves up soup, sandwiches, hot chocolate and homemade cookies fireside to skiers who complete the exhilarating trek.
