USA’s Cnossen Podiums at IPC Biathlon World Cup

release by US Biathlon Association

January 18, 2013 (Cable, Wisconsin) – U.S. Navy Seal Dan Cnossen (Topeka, Kansas) won silver at today’s 7.5-kilometer sprint event at the ICP World Cup in Cable, WI, posting a time of 22:34.4 and clean shooting. Today’s performance marked Cnossen’s third podium at this week’s IPC World Cup, taking silver in the 10 kilometer Nordic opener, and a bronze in the 15-kilometer event, and today’s first biathlon World Cup silver.

“It feels good to have a great day on the range,” said Cnossen following today’s race. “It has been a tough stretch with some rifle difficulties, so this feels extra sweet.”

Cnossen was 31.4 seconds back from today’s winner K. Kubio (JPN) with a time of 22:03.0 and clean shooting. E.Masiello (ITA) took third today posting a time of 24:09.7 and clean shooting.

“Dan wins the patience award this week,” said James Upham, U.S. Paralympic Team Coach. “During these cold spells the innards of the rifles start to get frosted and the rifles decide not to function. Dan’s rifle does not like the cold so today he used a brand new rifle and it worked well. Dan had to adjust his normal breathing cadence because of the different bolting mechanism. Great work by the staff to set the rifle up and really amazing focus by Dan to keep his cool and overcome obstacles. The ski service staff has been on fire, and we are taking advantage of local knowledge for ski preparation. The skis have been rockets,” said Upham.

Andy Soule (Pearland, TX), ret., Army,  posted a time of 23:40.4 (1+1) for sixth place today. ” Andy Soule had another solid performance today. Look for him to contend at World Championships. His fitness is back to where he was when he medaled in Vancouver. We also feel he can improve in the next six weeks.” added Upham.
