March 04, 2014 (Presque Isle, ME) – The USA’s Sean Doherty earned his third medal at the 2014 IBU Youth/Junior Worlds taking home the silver in the youth men’s 12.5km individual start at 6.3 seconds behind winner Yaroslav Kostyukov (RUS). The American star had four penalties vs two for the winner as Emilien Jacquelin (FRA) finished third suffering three penalties.

Canada’s Alex Dupuis with three penalties as well finished a strong 5th at 1:45.6 behind, while his teammate Jules Burnotte placed 6th, also with three penalties, another three seconds back at 1:48.4.

Bitter cold earlier in the day for the women’s race gave way to warmer temperatures in the afternoon for the men’s competition but a strong wind returned making for challenging conditions on the shooting range.

“Today was cold, but I felt pretty good on the skis,” said Doherty. “The first shooting went very well, but after I missed two in the first standing I knew that the door was wide open for someone with good shooting to take the lead. Even though I was skiing well I could not quite overcome two minutes of penalties. Overall, I am still very happy with the race and looking forward to the relay.”

The USA’s Brian Halligan finished 18th (38:52.7/+5), Aidan Miller (CAN) was 22nd (4:07.9/+6), Paul Everett (USA) was 34th (41:14.5/+6), Pearce Hanna (CAN) was 41st (6:49.5/7) and Kamran Muneer Husain (USA) was 51st (44:10.5/+9).

In the Youth Women’s 10km race American Madeleine Grace Phaneuf posted a strong eighth place  (37:14.7/+3) while teammate Anna Kubek from Duluth, MN finished 10th (37:22.8/+4). Julia Schwaiger (AUT) won with clean shooting and a time of 32:58.7 with Lisa Vittozzi (ITA) in second (34:04.4/+2), and Liliya Davletshina (RUS) in third (34:24.6/+2).

“The race was great, my skiing didn’t feel 100% but my shooting made up for that,” said Phaneuf. ” I was really happy to see that I could redeem myself from the pursuit race. Junior World Championships have been unbelievable so far. I would have never thought I would be able to get two top 10 finishes in my first international races. I’m very pleased with the results, and hope that I can continue my success in the upcoming seasons.”

Canada’s Emily Dickson was 30th (6:26.5/+4) followed by Leilani Tam Von Burg in 33rd (7:04.6/+5), Mikaela Paluszek (USA) finished 41st (41:32.4/+6), Megan Banks (CAN) was 42nd (8:41.0/+5) with Siena Ellingson (USA) in 43rd (43:12.7/+6) followed by Danielle Vrielink (CAN) in 46th (11:08.7/+10).
