UVM Carnival Day 1 – New Hampshire Leads

release by eisaskiing.org

February 7, 2009 (Stowe, VT) – Held on the newly christened race trail, Main Street, today’s Alpine Giant Slalom results were main street predictable as well with the perennial champions David Donaldson of the University of Vermont and Courtney Hammond of Dartmouth taking the individual wins.

The names in podium positions also proved familiar with Michael Cremeno of the University of New Hampshire besting his team mate William Ford by twelve tenths of a second for second place overall. On the women’s side Lindsay Cone had two very solid runs to come in second followed by another third place finish from Veronique Archambault-Leger, the same as her result from last week’s Slalom at the University of New Hampshire carnival.

The University of New Hampshire leads with 237 overall points to win the first day, though this is only half the story as the Nordic events will take place on Saturday and Sunday. Host team the University of Vermont was not far behind, posting a score of 210 points, while Dartmouth sat at third with 204 points. Further on down the leader board Middlebury and Williams battled it out followed by Bates and St. Lawrence.

From the cold and crisp morning to the sunny and warm afternoon, the conditions proved variable. The course, though not the notoriously difficult Hayride, proved to have some fickle points as well and spit out a number of racers who found themselves on the wrong line. Deep ruts also revealed themselves in the afternoon sun, providing some unintended directional changes for many a racer.

Tomorrow the carnival heats up as Nordic Skiing powerhouse Dartmouth is able to flex its muscle at the Trapp Family lodge while the University of Vermont and University of New Hampshire hit both the steeps and the flats with both teams full steam ahead. Join us to see who comes out on top with both the Nordic and Downhill races.
