November 7, 2008 (Silver Star, BC) – The light is green and the ground is white, which means Silver Star is opening its Nordic season Saturday, Nov. 8. With over 25cm of fresh snow in the past two days, Silver Star’s Nordic opening was given a major boost, allowing for grooming crews to hit the trails.
Environment Canada’s Gabor Fricska said a weather system currently working its way off the Pacific reached Silver Star Thursday morning, dropping another 10 cm. More snow is expected to fall overnight. “We may see some light accumulation in the early afternoon, and continue into the evening.†said Fricska. He said they are forecasting between 10 and 15 centimetres of snow to accumulate at elevations of 800 to 900 metres.
Silver Star’s grooming crews are already busy preparing the Cross Mountain paved trail, Paradise Camp, Comin’ Round The Mountain, Aquaduct, and Cabin East translating into more than 15 kilometres of trails. The good news is that tickets will be reduced to $12 and will remain that way until we can get at least half of our 60 km of trails open. “ We’re looking forward to another great Nordic and Alpine season,†said Michael Sherwood, Silver Star’s general manager.
The ticket office will be open seven days a week starting Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Our Nordic friends can also stop by for a drink and food at The Saloon, Long John’s and Bugaboos. Rentals will be available through Ski Dazzle and lessons are available at the Snowsport School both will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The snowfall is also good news for Silver Star’s Cross Country Ski Camps, running from Nov. 29 to Dec. 7. Glenn Bond, Silver Star’s Nordic manager, said this year’s camps have a truly international feel as people from around the globe are participating.
“People from Australia, U.S. and Europe are coming this year. The camps cater to everyone from beginners to experts, so it has a broad appeal for cross country enthusiasts,†said Bond.
