September 07, 2011 (Lake Placid, NY) – Join us for a NENSA L1 and USSA L100 Techique clinic to gain some new ideas for improving ski skills! This week starts the annual fall USST training camp in Lake Placid, NY. As is tradition now, NENSA will have a group of Elite team athletes participating alongside the U.S. ski team members and coaches. There will also be a technique clinic held in conjunction with the camp for coaches and athletes interested in improving their skiing and coaching skills.
Clinic will take place Sunday September 11th from 2- 4 PM. Meet at the Olympic Training Center on Old Military Road at 1:45 PM to sign in. Bring equipment for both classic and skate rollerskiing (helmet is mandatory) and running shoes. Bryan Fish (USST) and Janice Sibilia (NENSA) will instruct. This clinic will satisfy the technique requirement for USSA’s L100 coaches certification and NENSA’s L1 module for NENSA certification. (Anyone interested in working towards NENSA’s full L1 certification can plan on an additional 30 minutes following the technique clinic, for a basic physiology/training discussion.) To sign up please contact Janice Sibilia at janice@nensa.net. There is no charge for this clinic however, sign up is recommended so that we can have an idea how many people will participate!

June 09, 2011 (Salt Lake City, UT) – Following the the FIS and USSA Congress in May, several updates have been introduced for the 2012 season. The Cross Country Sport Committee has approved the following amendments:
Adjust the USSA NRL points to match FIS points more accurately by taking the average of the:
a. top 10 U.S. athletes differentials (difference between USSA & FIS points) for each list, to create a modifier for both distance points lists (men’s and women’s), and the
b. top 5 U.S. athletes differentials to create a modifier for the sprint points lists.
The plan involves adjusting the USSA NRL points list annually at minimum (each summer), but it was the wish of the committee to adjust each points list throughout the season.
A Technical Committee was named to oversee this process with the USSA Competition Services Dept annually: August Teague (Chair), Pat Cote, John Estle, Ernie Page and the USSA Nordic Director
By the 4th USSA points list, athletes’ overall points will be calculated by using a minimum of two (2) races from the current season of the total of 4 races used to calculate their overall points. Currently an athlete could be ranked 1st place on the USSA NRL from races in late Jan, Feb and Mar of the previous season, and having not raced at all in the current season. This would aim to mitigate that scenario. It will be tested in 2012, with results to be reviewed at the 2012 USSA Congress.
If a foreign or U.S. athlete ends up in the penalty (top 5) in a FIS/USSA race and does not have points (Active, but no points) the USSA may use their last known FIS points to calculate the USSA (not FIS) penalty for the benefit of the USSA field. Only if the last known FIS points were from the current or previous season. As per the USSA Nordic Comp Guide (page 22), they are not permitted to receive any prize money.
Nordic Comp Guide clarification: Use Regional USSA penalty minimums except for: USSA SuperTour/U.S. Championships/NCAA Championships/Birkie.
Added Guidelines for USSA SuperTour Finals that includes increasing the entry fee to be on par with U.S. Championships, no free lodging for USSA SuperTour Leaders or USST, free entry to Overall SuperTour leaders (4 + 4), USST (A & B), and some low point foreign athletes, and the events in principle should include the 30k/50k U.S. Championships, a Sprint, a 10/15k mass start & a Hill Climb pursuit start. A prologue can be added if possible/desired.
Dropped the U23 Sprint brackets from the U.S. Championships sprint events.
Junior World Championship Team Selection Criteria – Objective criteria modified to include results achieved at the NorAm Continental Cups being held in December 2011.
U23 Championship Team Selection Criteria – Objective criteria modified to include results achieved at the NorAm Continental Cups being held in December 2011, and to lower the women’s FIS point result from 60 to 55.
Approved moving towards a permanent coaches’ bib system, whereby licensed and certified USSA (Level 100 or above) coaches are issued a bib with a number that corresponds with their USSA license. This bib will afford the coach all coaches’ privileges at Junior Nationals, U.S. Championships and USSA SuperTour Finals. Coaches will be required to bring their bibs to these events, the Bibs are non-transferrable, and one day bibs will be available for rental for licensed, non-certified coaches from the OC at these events.
Ski exchanges will be allowed during the 30/50K U.S. Championships. Limit to one change per athlete in the 30k and 2 changes per athlete in a 50k in exchange boxes to be provided by the OC.
Junior National Championship rule changes/updates:
– Agreed to move JN’s 2013 back one week to March 11-16 as per Fairbanks OC request;
– Approved the use of a Sprint Relay at JN’s of +/-1.5k to replace the distance relay (same 3 person design and AK pts) when venue is considered suitable to host;
– Approved the change of the J1 Mass start distance at JN’s to 10k (from 15k);
– Approved changing the seeding of the JN distance races by USSA Distance pts (not overall);
– Approved the removal of rule 83.3.10 from the JN rules.
2014 Junior National Championships provisional bid has gone to Trapp Family Lodge, Stowe, VT. Progress towards preparations will be reviewed at the 2012 USSA Congress to confirm the selection.
The Assistant TD will receive room, meal reimbursement, and travel expenses for USSA SuperTour events.
Approved the Trail Homologation Procedures for USSA document Download here
To allow for a limited number of USSA SuperTour events that are not scored to FIS when there is a strategic purpose for being at the site. 2012: West Yellowstone (distance race), Owl Creek Chase, Birkie

March 12, 2011 (Toronto, ON) – The international SkiTrax FIS Fantasy World Cup 2010/11 Contest resumes this weekend as Lahti, Finland hosts the tenth round of the Viessmann XC FIS WCup. With the flurry of activity prior to the Oslo 2011 Nordic World Championships we only just realized that we did not post the contest standings after Drammen, Norway, February 19-20, and announce the winners of the WCup Breaks prizes that are awarded to the top 3 contest leaders before the Tour de Ski and the Oslo Nordic Worlds who win Buff Headware (value $22).
The contest leaders after Drammen and the WCup Breaks winners are STAR TEAM, Perugina Ski Team and SKIN-T, all with 1,134 points. Also part of the 4-way tie for first is rgsnow and because of this unique situation we’ll include them as part of the WCup Breaks prizes.
Our apologies for the delay in making this announcement. Only 10 points separate the top 6 teams with lots of racing still to come so stay tuned as the WCup wraps up this coming week in Falun, Sweden.

“The Team is going to be a mix of veterans and newcomers,” said Head Coach Dave Jarrett. “We are looking forward to Oslo with the nordic atmosphere, crowds and the chance to perform on a big stage. We will prepare the best we know how and do everything we can to win medals.”
The U.S. athletes have treated the World Cup season as a buildup towards the World Championships with each of the three medalists competing on reduced schedules. Lodwick has the best U.S. result with a fourth in Austria earlier this month. Spillane, who suffered a knee injury last summer, made his comeback just a week ago. Demong took a month off in anticipation of the birth of his baby boy. Both Demong and Spillane have had strong cross country performances in their returns and will be drawing a big focus on jump training heading into the Championships.
In 2009, Lodwick and Demong racked in the World Championship titles, with Demong clinching the large hill and Lodwick topping the Gundersen and mass start normal hill events. After an historic 2010 the USA crew is ready to sport the new Bjorn Daehlie black uniforms in Oslo as they head to the heart of nordic skiing. In Vancouver, 2003 World Champion Spillane earned three silver medals, Demong took home a gold and silver and Lodwick led the USA to silver in the team event.
Adding to the success and depth of the 2011 Team are the Fletcher brothers and Hendrickson. Both Fletchers are heading into World Champs strong posting top 30 results on the World Cup stage. Hendrickson is coming in with momentum as well after having successful races on the Continental Cup tour.
“Bryan Fletcher has had the best season of anyone on the Team this year,” said Jarrett. “We are looking forward to seeing his progression continue in Oslo and Taylor Fletcher is coming on strong.”
The powerhouse six-man team will begin its four World Championship events Saturday, Feb. 26 with the normal hill competition. The 2011 schedule was changed from 2009 when the mass start event (won by Lodwick) was added to the program. It has since been eliminated with a second team event being added, with one each on the normal and large hills.
The Team will be training on the Olympic venues in Utah over the next three weeks before heading to a pre-Worlds camp in the Olympic village of Lillehammer, Norway.
